Introduction

MIR Innovation (MIR stands for Maintenance, Control and Robotics), a subsidiary of Quebec’s state-owned Canadian power generation, transmission and distribution giant Hydro-Québec, has developed a drone adapted to work with a special sensor called Linecore.

Linecore is a special sensor developed by the company for high-precision analysis of the state of high-voltage wires. The developer said that power lines are constantly exposed to aggressive environmental influences and thus wear out a lot. Previously, the company spent huge amounts of money, effort and time on identifying and analyzing emergency sections of controlled power lines, now, thanks to the specially developed tandem “Dron – Linecore”, inspection has become easier, faster, more reliable, safer and more accurate, and costs have been reduced significantly.

About the product

The work of the tandem can be carried out both with the participation of a person and autonomously. When the system is installed on a power line, it can work around the clock 24 hours, as the drone is recharged from the high-voltage wire on which it operates. The drone can also go home on its own if weather conditions do not allow for a safe further inspection.

LineCore – can determine the state of galvanic protection of power lines, as well as the state of the core and each core. Determines the thickness of the zinc layer of the entire section with amazing accuracy, anomalies caused by corrosion, minimizing the costly sampling process. LineCore is the ideal tool for obtaining detailed information on the condition of aluminum steel wires (ACSR).

The data received by LineCore can then be used to calculate the degradation of the wire in order to estimate the residual life.

Advantages

  • Work continuity:

does not require violation of the integrity of the line for sampling and stopping the power line in operation.

  • Ease of use:

easy to use software for calibration, verification, archiving and analysis.

  • Versatility:

Works with any type of ACSR wire.

  • Integrated LineROVer:

able to pass any obstacles in the form of grounding wires, splicing couplings.

  • Built-in LineScout:

able to overcome obstacles in the form of protruding bundles, single wires and any other similar obstacles.

  • Wear resistance:

Designed for use in aggressive environments.
