About the product

Eachine E013 Small Pepper is another 65mm clone of TinyWhoop. The presented model came out after a more advanced version of the Eachine E010S drone, the capabilities of which have already been fully appreciated by amateurs and professionals. Unlike its predecessor, the E013 quad is built on a closed flight controller with a permanent 6-axis stabilized flight mode, which completely eliminates both the possibility of changing settings through the configurator and the presence of the Acro mode.

As a result, this approach clearly predetermined the future audience of users and as a result we get an excellent safe FPV simulator for honing primary piloting skills at home when the weather is bad. Further, as much as possible about this burning FPV novelty in our review.

Eachine E013 Small Pepper: Energetic Tiny Whoop

The Eachine E013 quadcopter is equipped with standard 1S 6015 17000KV motors. For beginners, their potential is quite enough. Over time, it will be better to change the stock motors to more powerful and faster ones, this will significantly add dynamics and, in general, “sharpness” in subsequent flights.

The drone received three spending modes (or activity modes). The change of costs is carried out from the button on the equipment, and is accompanied by a signal, where one short signal corresponds to the first mode, two short signals to the second and three to the third maximum consumption mode.

Eachine E013 Small Pepper: Energetic Tiny Whoop

The Eachine E013 is equipped with a 1/3″ CMOS M7 1000TVL camera with an optimal field of view (FOV) for FPV flights of 120° H170°. It does not have an angle of inclination and is fixed rigidly in a horizontal position. In practice, it has proven itself from the best side, showed bright colors with not bad photosensitivity.

video transmitter

Eachine E013 Small Pepper: Energetic Tiny Whoop

A 40-channel 5.8GHz VTX with a power of 25mW is responsible for broadcasting the video signal. The signal quality is good, but the range is not the best among the 25mW VTX I. In an interference-free area, it provides a confident FPV broadcast up to 30 meters away. For home flights, this is more than enough, if your house is not a castle, of course.

When you fly alone

If the user flies alone at home, then no pre-flight setup of the video transmitter will have to be done.

It will be enough:

  1. Power on the drone (blue LED flashes quickly)
  2. Turn on the FPV goggles by pressing and holding the “Scan” button until the screen turns on (usually about 4 seconds).
  3. Run a single short press of the “Scan” button to auto-search for an FPV broadcast channel. “Scan” will appear in the lower right corner of the display. Wait for a clear and stable image from the drone’s camera to appear on the display. (This procedure is carried out only once).
  4. Make sure the Throttle stick is in the lowest position.
  5. Turn on the control equipment (the blue LED of the drone has stopped flashing, the red LED on the equipment will flash).
  6. On the control equipment, move the Throttle stick in one motion from the lowest position to the highest position and back (the LED on the equipment has stopped flashing)
  7. The quad is ready for FPV flight.

When flying in a group

When two or more drones gather in one place, it is necessary that each drone broadcast a video stream at its own individual frequency, since if the frequencies match, there will be problems with displaying the FPV image. To prevent this from happening, there is a fine-tuning of the video transmitter. In our case, 40 channels are used for this in the standard 5.8 GHz frequency range for video transmission:

Changing channels and frequency bands is done through a small button located next to the main linear VTX antenna on the top of the drone’s fuselage. The shift indicators are two rows of LEDs (blue and red), which are located under the plastic shell on the video transmitter board.

Eachine E013 Small Pepper: Energetic Tiny Whoop

To correctly set the desired parameters, at first glance, it is necessary to separate the fuselage from the main frame by unscrewing two screws on the left and right sides of the quadric. In the process of operation, we found another in-place method. Two rows of LEDs are perfectly visible through the opening in the tail section of the drone.

Eachine E013 Small Pepper: Energetic Tiny Whoop

The first row of blue LEDs, where the first five (from left to right) display the user-selected frequency band (Band 1-5). The change of lanes is carried out by long pressing the button (about 2 seconds). When to release the button, the rapidly flashing sixth “Time Indicator” will indicate.

The sixth LED of the first row is a time indicator or, more simply, indicates to the user (starts blinking frequently) when to release the button in order to change one of the five frequency bands (Band 1-5) or goes out completely, thereby indicating a change in the PAL system to NTSC and back.

The seventh LED of the first row indicates which PAL / NTSC system the transmitter is operating in, if it flashes, then PAL, if it is lit, then NTSC. In order for the system change to take place, it is necessary to hold the button pressed for about 5 seconds (the sixth time indicator goes out, indicating that the system change has occurred and the button can be released).

The second row consists of eight red LEDs, where each one displays one of the eight channels (CH1-8). Changing channels is carried out by short pressing the same button.

After the user has selected the desired frequency for video transmission, it is necessary to restart the auto-search on the FPV goggles by short pressing the “Scan” button. Thus, its own individual frequency of the video stream is set for each drone participating in the race.

FPV Goggles Eachine VR006

Eachine E013 Small Pepper: Energetic Tiny Whoop

The Eachine E013 comes complete with the Eachine VR006 FPV goggles (single antenna version), which also comes with the more advanced and faster Eachine Q90C quad. We note the indicative quality of materials and the performance of the product as a whole for the budget segment of FPV goggles.

Eachine E013 Small Pepper: Energetic Tiny Whoop

The screen diagonal is 3 inches (7.62cm). Screen resolution 500 × 300 pixels. The glasses received a built-in 40-channel video receiver. And also not the best picture format for FPV flights – 4: 3, we attribute this fact to the minuses.

The built-in battery (1S 500mAh LiPo) provides an operating time of about 1 hour, which corresponds to the declared time in the specification. When the battery charge of the glasses is running out, the indication with residual voltage will start flashing in the left corner of the screen (operating range from 4.2-3.7v). If you ignore the warning, then eventually the screen will just turn off.

Eachine E013 Small Pepper: Energetic Tiny Whoop

Recharging is carried out from the USB cable that comes with the kit, somewhere in 50 minutes. The microUSB charging port is located on the left side of the mask, directly below the antenna. The beginning of recharging is signaled by a constantly lit LED (red) located at the bottom of the glasses. When charging is complete, the LED will turn off.

By the way, the fact that the glasses are on is signaled by the second LED (also red), located at the end of the front of the glasses behind the ventilation duct. It often flashes when you hold the “Scan” button while turning the glasses on or off. The LED lights up constantly when the glasses are turned on and goes out when they are turned off.

Despite the simple budget performance, they surprisingly proved themselves exclusively from the best side. They are held securely on the head, the mask fits snugly to the face and without a single gap. The foam seal is soft and does not create discomfort throughout the flight. With good lighting, the picture is generally clear, the eyes did not experience any discomfort. We think beginners will appreciate it.

Control buttons

Eachine E013 Small Pepper: Energetic Tiny Whoop

  • “+” / “-“ – to manually adjust the frequency band (as well as to change the settings in the menu)
  • Menu – to access such settings as: brightness / contrast / saturation / AV and AV-in modes
  • Scan – with a short press, it starts auto-search for the operating FPV frequency. When held, turns the FPV goggles on or off.

Everything is intuitive and does not raise questions during operation.

To expand the possibilities of using glasses, the developer added an AV-in port that allows you to connect them to any device that supports classic pairing using tulips (for example, a DVD player). To our surprise, the cable itself was not included in the kit, but according to the information from the official website, it should still be included with the FPV goggles.

Eachine E013 Small Pepper: Energetic Tiny Whoop

Since our FPV team uses goggles from a more expensive segment, for obvious reasons, we could not objectively evaluate the quality of the VR006. Therefore, we additionally decided to get an opinion on the first sensations of operation from a person who had never flown a drone and certainly did not use such accessories. Upon completion of the test, our newcomer gave a positive rating to the glasses, which confirmed the collective opinion that Eachine VR006 will be optimal for all beginners.

Eachine E013 Small Pepper: Energetic Tiny Whoop

In stock, the Eachine E013 Small Pepper comes with a single-cell 200mAh lithium polymer (LiPo) battery with a 35C discharge rate indicative of these little ones. According to the specification provides a flight time of 5 minutes. In practice, this time averaged 3 minutes 40 seconds, which is generally the norm for such babies (in the first of three activity modes). Stock battery lasts only 50-60 recharge cycles, then the battery performance gradually starts to drop. And this is also the norm for such cheap batteries.

Recharging is done with the included USB cable. Charging time is no more than 40 minutes. The fact that the battery is charged will be indicated by a constantly lit LED (red) on the USB plug.

On the first charge cycles, the total flight time will be minimal. With each new cycle, the time spent by the drone in the air will increase and reach the maximum values (3:40 min).

We recommend that you additionally buy a few more batteries, but with a larger capacity and discharge rate (for example, Eachine 3.7v 260mAh 45C Lipo = $5). This will increase the total flight time to 5 minutes.

Eachine E013 Small Pepper: Energetic Tiny Whoop

When the battery is low, the blue light on the quad will flash rapidly. But, unfortunately, the pilot will not know about this, since it will not be visible with glasses. This fact is a big disadvantage, mainly due to the fact that LiPo batteries do not like both overcharging and overdischarging. Subsequently, this leads to a significant decrease in the overall performance of the battery. Ultimately, the battery will start to discharge quickly and stop holding a charge. If you want to get the most out of your battery for a long time, you should always check when the battery is dead and when it is fully charged!

It should be borne in mind that the red diode on the USB plug of the charging cable will also light up when the battery is not connected to the charging cable. For example, in this way you can check the performance of the LED itself.

Eachine E013 Small Pepper: Energetic Tiny Whoop

The Eachine E013 quadcopter received a compact, high-quality control panel operating classically at a frequency of 2.4GHz, the sticks of which are made of a metallized alloy, which is rare for such a UAV segment. A trifle, but nice. If you are a beginner, then this will be quite convenient equipment for you. In our opinion, it is worth noting the ergonomic arrangement of all buttons, it is enough to familiarize yourself with their purpose in the instructions once and you don’t need to look where you press.

Button assignment

Power is supplied by three AAA batteries, take care to purchase them in advance, because they will not be included in the kit.

Not without a “Drop in the ointment” – if you are one of those users who are used to piloting exclusively with their own control equipment, then this quadric model will not work for you. During operation, it turned out that due to some features of the electronic filling, the drone can only be bound with one control equipment, and this is the one that comes with the kit.

When you install the batteries, after unscrewing the screw, you should not remove it, because a plastic washer holds it on the back and prevents it from falling out.

  • For accurate operation of the gyroscope, it is recommended to calibrate it after each accident. To do this, immediately after the crash, return the drone to its pre-flight horizontal position. Then, on the control equipment in one movement, move both sticks (joystick) to the lower right corner at an angle of 45 ° (long beep). Hold them in this position until the blue indicator of the aircraft stops blinking rapidly. Calibration completed.

On various Internet trading platforms, the version without glasses is sold for an average of $36. The version with glasses will cost the consumer $66.

The main audience of Eachine E013 users is novice pilots aged 8 years and over. It is this contingent that will be able to fully appreciate all the advantages of a quadric. The experience of operating the Eachine E013 Small Pepper quadrocopter has shown that the manufacturer is noticeably reinsured by setting the age limit of 14+. In fact, even the most careless pilot will have to try very hard to harm the people around him, pets, and even more so the furniture and equipment that each of us has at home.

Such safety is provided, first of all, by the low weight of only 25 grams, the material of execution (ABS), low-power collector motors and the annular protection of the rotors.

In many reviews to date, the Eachine E013 has proven itself to be quite a shock-resistant drone. Its elastic frame, propeller protection, dome, in which the camera and video transmitter are hidden, withstand the mistakes of novice pilots. We also acknowledge this fact. But the integrity of the instance that we had in the test, our newcomer, in the end, albeit slightly, but managed to break.

The damage itself was not immediately noticed. After another crash, the protection of the left front main rotor separated at the place of its junction with the main frame. An attempt to restore the integrity of the protection with glue was unsuccessful.

Despite the damage, the quadric did not lose its flight qualities. Further destruction of the damaged area, despite ongoing falls and collisions with obstacles, has not yet occurred. No other damage was found during the entire period of operation.

In order to further introduce the unmanned hobby, at the request of our beginner quadric participating in the test, all elements from the damaged E013 frame will be transferred to the whole Eachine E010 (built on a similar frame as the test sample).

Throughout the test, the Eachine E013 Small Pepper worked flawlessly with all the functions available in the arsenal: return to equipment, headless mode and flips. Despite the damage, which we will attribute more to marriage than to the fact that this is the fate of every E013 drone, it is without a doubt worth the money spent and is a long-term purchase for the novice consumer segment. What we have already managed to verify by completing the tests. Recommended as the first drone for home FPV flights.
