Apple Watch – High Technology in a Stylish Shell

Apple Watch - High technology in a stylish shell

Two years after startup Pebble blew up the wearables market with its smartwatches, Apple is making a move and launching the new Apple Watch. Apple has the ability to set the trend for the entire market, something that Samsung has failed to do with its own solution and watches based on Android Wear. But has the company been able to overcome limitations such as use cases and battery life and perform miracles once again? Read our detailed review of the most anticipated hours of the year.

Design and display

The Apple Watch may not be the epitome of style in the fashion industry, but among competing smartwatch solutions, it’s clearly one of the most compelling. In total, 3 models are on sale: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch Edition. The watch is available in 38mm and 42mm versions.

The Watch Sport is the entry-level version with a silicone strap and an aluminum alloy case. The more advanced Watch model was equipped with a stainless steel case and strap, while the Watch Edition is a premium version with a gold case and a high-quality genuine leather strap.

The 38mm Apple Watch Sport with a silicone strap came to our review, that is, the youngest version in the line. The watch looks quite sleek and interesting, the silicone feels quite heavy, the build quality is great, there is no sense of cheapness.

The company asks for a rather large amount for, in general, modest case materials. For example, Cogito Watch 2.0 or Motorola Moto 360 are presented in a version with a metal strap, but are several times cheaper. The strap can be easily replaced, but you won’t be able to use the first strap from other watches: Apple reserves the right to release them. This is why Apple Watch bands are so expensive.

On the right side of the watch are the power button and the “crown” for easy operation with the interface. The back of the Apple Watch has a slightly protruding optical heart rate sensor. There is no separate port for charging the device, instead a magnetic induction charger is attached to the back.

The watch case is protected according to the IPX7 standard, that is, short-term immersion to a depth of up to 1 m is possible. This means that the watch will survive a little rain or a shower, but swimming is strictly contraindicated for them.

The display has a resolution of 340 x 272 pixels, a density of 290 dpi (in the 42 mm version 390 x 312 pixels and 302 dpi). Yes, the resolution does not reach the Samsung Gear S, but in terms of brightness and color reproduction, this is clearly one of the best displays on the market. Ion-X glass is responsible for protecting the display. In the Watch and Watch Edition versions, the display is protected by sapphire crystal.

Functions and use

Apple Watch runs on a brand new Watch OS system. The processor is a branded Apple S1. In total, 512 MB of RAM and 8 GB of internal memory are available, 2 GB of which are reserved for music, 75 MB for photos and videos, and the rest is left for applications. There is no built-in camera here, but you can remotely control the camera of your smartphone.

The watch is able to work in tandem with your iPhone and without it, they are practically nothing. With a wireless connection, the watch shows all notifications from your smartphone: messages, tweets, Instagram likes, calendar reminders – everything that is possible. The unique Taptic Engine technology is used to notify you of a received notification, which literally touches your hand without anyone noticing.

Using the companion app on iPhone, you can customize notifications flexibly. This is very useful if you lead a socially active lifestyle and do not want to be distracted by notifications every two minutes. The only pity is that there is no function to filter messages by sender in order to receive messages only from important people.

You can also make calls and reply to messages with your voice, and using Bluetooth headphones, you can listen to music directly from the watch without having to take your smartphone with you, good for training. In addition, Apple Watch can track steps, rest time, and daily activity, periodically reminding you to get up for a workout.

Of the less important, but no less interesting functions, I also note the ability to send the rhythm of your heart beats to a loved one (the owner of other Apple Watches). Or the ability to draw some kind of drawing by hand and also send it to him.

This watch has its own app store, which currently has several thousand applications from third-party developers. The more this store grows, the more functional the watch will become, it all depends on the imagination of the developers. For example, right now, using the watch, you can order a taxi or view the status of your current bank account.

Unfortunately, Apple hasn’t managed to make battery life stand out from the competition: the Apple Watch can last a typical day, but then you have to charge it before bed. In music mode, you should expect about 6 hours, and in continuous talk mode – only 3. I’m not used to sleeping with a watch on my arm, so it’s not so difficult for me to charge the device every day before bed.

Conclusion

At the moment, Apple Watch essentially has only one audience – iPhone owners, because these watches are not compatible with other smartphones. Moreover, these same owners do not have so much choice: Android Wear watches do not support the iPhone, and the famous Pebble, which we already talked about once, have too many restrictions. So if you already have several Apple devices, including the iPhone, then this watch will be a great companion, a stylish accessory and a great addition to your electronics ecosystem.
