DJI has collected statistics of the most popular questions about the Mavic Mini quadcopter and is ready to provide detailed answers to some of them. We hope that this article will add useful knowledge to you.
In October 2019, Mavic Mini, a new ultra-compact drone for daily flights, entered the hobby drone market. The novelty created a considerable resonance in the quadcopter user community and a lot of reasons for questions, for example, about the functionality and future fate of previously released successful models. This article highlights the most frequently asked questions and provides the most complete answers. Let’s start!
Is my Mavic Air or Spark obsolete with the introduction of the Mavic Mini?
Each of our products has its own unique features and benefits. Spark remains a great drone for beginners who are not familiar with the basics of radio control and aerial photography. The Mavic Mini is a step up for anyone looking for the most compact and lightweight quadcopter with high flight performance and camera capabilities. Mavic Air has many automated and intelligent features, as well as a forward-facing obstacle detection sensor. We suggest you choose a drone based on your own needs and level of experience.
Which drone is right for me: Mavic Mini or Mavic Air?
Mavic Mini and Mavic Air have similar 12MP 1/2.3” CMOS cameras, however Mavic Mini shoots 2.7K video while Mavic Air is capable of shooting 4K, both at 30fps. Both drones are well-suited for travelers who need small footprints on their list of requirements.
Other drone differences include size, flight time, and ease of use. The Mavic Mini is smaller and weighs less than 250 grams, which is important under Russian law — the drone won’t have to be registered. The Mavic Mini is controlled using the new DJI Fly app, which is aimed primarily at users whose creativity is associated with fast video shooting and social networking. And finally, its flight time reaches 30 minutes. Mavic Air impresses with its many smart features and maximum automation modes.
Does the Mavic Mini have the same flight rules and restrictions as other drones?
Yes. However, the mass of 249 grams allows you to legally not register the drone and not register it in many countries, for example, in Russia.
The concept of flight safety is closely related to public and national security, which every Mavic Mini user should keep in mind, soberly assessing their own responsibility and strictly observing local restrictions. Remember: the absence of the need for registration does not cancel the rules for the use of airspace, photography and video filming.
How high can the Mavic Mini go?
By default, the ceiling of the quadcopter is 120m, however, in the DJI Fly app settings, you can increase the flight altitude to 500m. The maximum height at which the drone can fly is 3000m, but be sure that you do not violate the rules and laws by flying high, they may vary by country and region! We strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with all local regulations and restricted areas before flying for the first time. Security never fails!
Mavic Mini can really fly 30 minutes?
Yes. The flight time reaches 30 minutes at a constant speed of 14 km/h and calm weather. With its light weight and 2400 mAh battery, Mavic Mini can stay in the air longer than the average drone of a similar size.
Mavic Mini is very light. Can he fight the wind?
The Mavic Mini is small and light, but you won’t notice it from its behavior in winds up to 8 m/s, the drone will fly well and hover confidently.
Does Mavic Mini have optical sensors?
The Mavic Mini has a single down-facing sensor whose main function is to improve stabilization and altitude hold, especially when flying indoors. Also, this sensor allows you to effectively detect obstacles located below. The Mavic Mini does not have sensors pointing in other directions, and therefore we recommend using the original propeller guards, which reliably protect the aircraft from being hit in any direction.
How does Mavic Mini transmit video?
Mavic Mini uses extended range Wi-Fi video transmission to help you maintain confident eye contact with the aircraft and frame beautiful shots.
Can I use the Mavic Mini battery for other Mavic series quadcopters?
No. The intelligent battery is designed specifically for Mavic Mini and is not compatible with other drones, radio systems, and ground equipment. Always be sure you are using the correct components.
Does the Mavic Mini have Pano, Timelapse, and Digital Zoom?
No. Mavic Mini only has single shot and timed photo modes. However, if you want to try something new and interesting — we recommend using one of the four special QuickShot modes!
Does Mavic Mini support ActiveTrack and other smart modes?
Mavic Mini has four QuickShot modes for capturing creative entertainment videos: Rocket, Circle, Dronie, and Helix, ActiveTrack is not available.

Can Mavic Mini shoot video in RAW? Can I manually adjust the exposure?
Mavic Mini doesn’t support RAW format, auto exposure mode is the only one available for shooting videos. However, you can choose between manual and automatic mode when taking photos, which will help with specific tasks such as shooting at night.
How fast is the Mavic Mini?
The speed of the drone depends on the selected flight mode: Sport, Position, or CineSmooth. The maximum level flight speed is 13 m/s in Sport mode. Be careful — trust me, it’s really fast! Engage Sport mode only after you have mastered the controls in other modes.
