You may already be famil­iar with the Run­Cam Thumb cam­era. The Thumb Pro inher­its two fun­da­men­tal prin­ci­ples from its pre­de­ces­sor: it has no bat­tery to keep it as light as pos­si­ble, and it records gyro­scope read­ings dur­ing flight, which can lat­er be used to sta­bi­lize frames using the well-known Gyroflow soft­ware tool.

What’s new?

One of the main crit­i­cisms of the orig­i­nal Thumb is the low def­i­n­i­tion of FHD video (1080p at 60 fps), which remains a prob­lem after the sta­bi­liza­tion stage. Thumb Pro offers much more video poten­tial: it shoots in 4K/30fps, 2.7K/60fps, 1440p/60fps, and 1080p/120fps! This allows the out­put to sta­bi­lize images with expo­nen­tial clar­i­ty. It also allows you to shoot and sta­bi­lize images in ver­ti­cal for­mat (4:3/3:4/16:9/9:16).

QR code management

GoPro Labs inspired Run­Cam engi­neers to quick­ly con­trol cam­era set­tings: a sim­i­lar QRCode sys­tem cre­at­ed by an appli­ca­tion on a smart­phone allows you to quick­ly change the shoot­ing for­mat from hor­i­zon­tal to ver­ti­cal, as well as auto­mate the pre­lim­i­nary adjust­ment of clar­i­ty, sat­u­ra­tion, and expo­sure.

The Thumb Pro weighs 16 grams and mea­sures 54 x 25.5 x 21mm. It records video to a microSD mem­o­ry card and saves the gyro­scope data to a file, ready to be entered into the Gyroflow soft­ware. It is equipped with a microUSB con­nec­tor for con­nect­ing to a com­put­er and access­ing data with­out remov­ing the mem­o­ry card. It should be pow­ered by no more than 5V. For con­nec­tion, a 4‑pin sol­der cable with a con­nec­tor is includ­ed, through which you can also con­nect the Thumb Pro to the flight con­troller, which will allow you to start and stop video record­ing with a tog­gle switch on the con­trol equip­ment.
